Thornactive

Southampton City Council in conjunction with the community of Thornhill used a process called participatory budgeting to commission the Thornactive project .(This is where the community selects and approves projects that best meet their needs.)

We are working with delivery partners Active Options for the next 3 years but the project has already begun improving the health and wellbeing of community members and reducing the cumulative impact of obesity on individuals and services.

  • Our weight management programme provides support and equips participants with the tools required to self-manage their own health and dietary choices and reduce obesity.
  • The programme is designed to build capacity, enabling participants to be better equipped to provide advice and motivation to friends and family members extending reach and impact the across the wider community.

The Thornactive weight management programme provides support and equips participants with the tools required to self-manage their own health and dietary choices and reduce obesity. We have seen significant health improvements for participants using physiological measures but the programme is designed to build capacity, enabling participants to be better equipped to provide advice and motivation to friends and family members extending reach and impact the across the wider community. Our evaluations describe the Programme’s qualitative and quantitative impact on individuals, services and the wider community as part of our full Value for Money Assessments. They include:

  • Health data - pre and post programme Weight, BMI, peak flow, cholesterol etc, to assess the intervention; including longer term health behaviours and lifestyle change
  • Identifying the community needs, interests, and barriers to participation
  • Identifying the most effective forms of communication in the locality, and for different audiences
  • Identifying effectiveness of recruitment and development of volunteer peers/groups from the target areas to lead and/or support community engagement, development and/or delivery of activities
  • Assessing the impact of specific interventions/activities, including the potential for post-programme sustainability
  • Making recommendations for action which responds to the local needs/solutions identified in Thornhill.
